Police are still investigating the cause of her death, and family members of Gomez believe that it was a case of domestic violence.
News 12 spoke with an organization that supports victims of gender-based violence. Voces Latinas, a nonprofit that aids victims of domestic violence, says situations like these are not uncommon. On average, Voces Latinas says they have 25 to 40 referrals of domestic abuse monthly.
Gomez’s sister said that every time police were called to Gomez’s apartment, she would not pursue charges – something advocates say is all too common.
“People may stay in abusive relationships due to fear, either because they’re being constantly threatened with suicide or receiving threats to harm their children,” said Farima Cabrera, mental health provider for Voces Latinas.
A memorial now sits outside of the entrance to Gomez’s apartment.
According to the NYPD domestic violence report, there were nearly 24,000 incidents reported in 2021.
