Tenants at the Mitchel Houses in Mott Haven say their homes were robbed following a fatal fire Friday.
The fire started in a trash compactor chute, which then pushed smoke through the upper floors, killing 6-year-old Aiden Hayward. Police say the child was found lying unconscious on the third floor. A 32-year-old man who police say was lying next to the child is currently in critical condition.
Around $15,000 was stolen from one apartment the night of the fire, according to police.
Tahnia Brown, 26, lives on the 28th floor and says she is devastated.
"Who would do this? Who would steal from us after something so awful has already happened?" Brown said.
Brown says she caught someone she believes is a fellow resident in the building taking Brown's things out of her apartment after the fire. She says the woman told her she was just looking after the items.
Police are investigating the robbery and cause of the fire.
