An outpouring of pride flowed through the hallways of a Highbridge school as students celebrated Dominican Republic Independence Day.
Students ranging from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade waved Dominican flags, danced and sang at P.S. 126 on West 166th Street as they marked the 172nd year of the Dominican Republic's independence.
The country gained its independence from Haiti in 1844.
The indoor parade was the second time that the school marked the occasion. "A large majority of our staff and students come from the Dominican Republic," said Principal Nadine Foster. "We aim to celebrate diversity on all levels."
Dominican Republic Independence Day is Feb. 27.
