The state stepped in late Wednesday to halt a bus crisis in the Huntington School District.
The district was notified earlier that Huntington Coach Corporation was slashing dozens of routes.
Superintendent James Polansky reached out to the state for help and it worked.
Sen. Jim Gaughran issued a statement saying, "I've been working around the clock with the governor's office to find a solution and I'm thrilled that the governor has secured emergency assistance to ensure there is no interruption in service for any students Thursday or Friday. I implore Huntington Coach to fulfill their contract and resume full service immediately."
Huntington Coach Corporation initially emailed the district indicating that as of Sept. 30, the company would no longer cover as many as 42 morning routes and 34 afternoon routes to public and private schools. The email also stated that the company would abandon its five existing contracts with Huntington effective close of business Oct. 8.
Polansky says he understands that the sudden notice caught the district and parents off guard.
"I understand that people are upset," says Polansky. "This is a company that we've been working with as a school district for 62 years, we are right in their backyard and it's Huntington Coach."
It's currently unclear what will happen to the affected bus routes next week.
