At least 132,000 drivers have been observed speeding near school zones since the deactivation of speed-cameras in school zones, according to
Mayor Bill de Blasio.
In a release Monday, the mayor wrote the Department of Transportation is using the deactivated cameras to collect data.
From the data obtained, the DOT says 132,253 drivers were seen speeding at least 10 miles over the speed limit near school zones during school hours.
The 120 cameras went dark on July 25, after state lawmakers failed to renew a bill to keep them active. Other cameras inside of school zones are still being used in the city but will also go dark in August.
The mayor says state legislators must end their vacation early and act before the first day of school, which is just weeks away.
The Department of Transportation says it is still collecting data from the unused cameras.
