The Lotus Nail Lounge in Ocean Hill is welcoming dozens of clients back to its shop now that phase 3 is underway.
To avoid any potential risk to COVID-19, the owners have restructured the space to match state guidelines.
It took about a month for the Trujillo siblings to implement the safety changes.
"Super clean. Super, super clean. We're pretty much tearing our place upside down. The floors, the ceilings, the nail polishes. You name it, we cleaned it," says co-owner Dario Trujillo.
Plexiglas separates the nail techs from clients and everything is scheduled down to the minute.
"We actually have changed the time limits on our services to incorporate cleaning after serving our customers," Trujillo explains. "So after each customer, we will take about 10 to 15 minutes to fully clean that particular station in preparation for the new customer."
The store has to be at 50% occupancy for New York State guidelines, so they ask people to arrive right on time for appointments. Any customer that arrives at the lounge early will have to wait outside.
"I had to ask a few people to stay outside just so that we can social distance," says co-owner Rosario Trujillo.
Typically, about 85% of customers are appointments with the remainder walk-ins.
Now they can only book by appointment, but the brother and sister owners say it allows a more intimate experience.
"We just had some clients that left, they're waiting for their mom, so I was just talking to them. 'Is this your first time? How was your experience?' You know, so it's a lot easier to provide that now." Rosario Trujillo says.
Appointments are booking fast with only a few available next week.
Both Dario and Rosario Trujillo say it's a blessing after being closed for more than three months.
