Police say a Riverhead mom was drunk and high on drugs when she crashed her car with her daughter inside.
Amy Wesolowski, 34, appeared in front of a judge this morning and pleaded not guilty.
Police say Wesolowski was driving with her 4-year-old daughter Gracelyn Perkowski when she crashed into another vehicle, injuring the 29-year-old driver too. The crash happened on Flanders Road in Flanders around noon Thursday.
All three were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center. The 4-year-old's injuries were so severe that she had to be transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital.
Court documents say Wesolowski told officers at the scene that she'd taken three different drugs, including an opioid and Adderall. In addition, her daughter was not properly secured in the back seat.
"It was a very horrific scene," says New York State Police Capt. Christopher Casale. "There was severe damage to both vehicles. When you have impact like that, when you have one car that's, you know, driving at a reasonable speed and another car that's essential moving very slowly, it causes a very large impact."
Wesolowski was charged with multiple crimes, including DWI with a child.
She is on supervised release following the crash.
Wesolowski's driver license was not taken away pending a blood test. Police say Wesolowski was driving with a suspended license.
Wesolowski is due back in court Wednesday.
