Mayor Eric Adams and other elected officials have voiced their concerns about security details for New Year’s Eve in Times Square.
Adams says he fears someone will feel compelled to protest the Israel-Hamas war on such a highly visible stage.
"There's an added concern because of some of the protests you have been seeing,” he said. “And there was an attempt to disrupt the tree lightning. And I was sure that there was going to be some type of attempt this year to use that stage for some other concerns that people are having. The police department did an amazing job during the tree lighting to mitigate any form of major disruptions and they're going to do it this year."
Adams added that police will be using technology to enhance security. They're also employing some new strategies with officers so most will remain at their posts and avoid creating new vulnerabilities.
