The father of the 8-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in the head in the Bronx pleaded not guilty Tuesday.
News 12 is told that 43-year-old Rajon Grant was arrested around midnight and was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.
It is believed that Grant’s son was playing with his gun when he shot himself in the head.
Grant was not home at the time of the shooting, but News 12 is told that the child’s mother was.
Police arrived at the scene at 5 Fordham Hill Oval around 12:30 p.m. Monday. They say the boy lives there with his family. Investigators say the boy got his hand on his father’s 9 mm unlicensed handgun, which was supposedly stored in a safe inside a closet.
It’s unclear if the safe was locked. Grant raced back to the home once he heard a neighbor rushed to try and help the boy survive.
“He was looking up, not responsive, eyes open, blood everywhere,” the neighbor says. “So I just ran back out, ran in my house and called 911.”
News 12 is told the child is stable but remains in critical condition after making it out of surgery on Monday.
News 12 is told the bullet did not penetrate his skull, but he still has a long road to recovery.
Grant is being held on $5,000 bail in cash and $10,000 bail in other forms of payment.
The case is set to continue on Jan. 22
