Tolls on state thruways are now entirely cashless.
Overhead gantries are the only way to pay tolls on the New York State Thruway, meaning no more paying by cash at toll booths or getting printed tickets.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the cashless system is meant to speed up traffic and reduce emissions.
The new system started Friday night with gantries at more than 50 spots along the 450-mile stretch of road within the thruway.
Those who have an E-ZPass, will have their account charged the appropriate toll, and those who don't will be billed by mail.
The state is encouraging drivers to download the new "Tolls-NY" app. If helps drivers manage their payments even if they don't have an E-ZPass.
